Fixing ruts in lawn

Recommended Posts

I have ruts in my lawn from some bobcat work last fall. Whats the best way to fix them? Do I rip up the lawn add dirt and reseed? Do I add roundup to the grass in the ruts, add dirt and reseed? Can I get away with just adding dirt on top of the grass and reseeding? The ruts aren't terribly deep but they are noticeable. Maybe 3-4".

I have done this in the past, added dirt and reseeded. Now, if you have alot of weeds in those ruts, then I might spray round up and then add dirt and seed.

I would guess that if you have weeds in the ruts, then they would be in other areas in the lawn so really no sense to do just the ruts for weeds.

While the ground is soft this spring try to roll your lawn, find something like a 55 gallon drum and fill it with water and roll it across the ruts. They make attachments for lawn tractors you could probably rent for this. Most landscapers will have a walk behind version of this if you know anyone in the industry

Yep, and when you do reseed, make sure to broadcast some seed all around the ruts, rather then just right in the ruts themselves. Otherwise you'll end up with nice lush green tire tracks wherever the ruts used to be.

Spread it out, over evenly raked ground, and in a couple months you'll never know they were there.
