Kinnickinnic River

I have never fished the Kinni but yes fish will be active this time of year. Stream conditions are pretty stable right now around here but not sure if the heavy snow got the area up there. If so I would expect the melt to create some less than optimal conditions.

Trout stay active in cold water. The only thing that affects them now is being able to see your fly...or lure or whatever you're using. As long as you're not fishing chocolate milk, it should be ok.

Yeah, so far the snow melt is going at a pace that isn't causing any high waters in any of the streams in the metro...I would assume there isn't any difference over there. I'll be using spinning tackle. At the very least it'll be a nice day to scout around.

Well, I scouted around, but it certainly wasn't a nice day eek At the very least the rain let up just a few minutes after I started fishing. Started in Roberts, and worked my way down to River Falls. Water was normal, maybe a little low, and clear. I caught 5 brown trout total (my 1st ever WI trout). Lost about the same amount, had a lot of strikes and follows, and seen them swimming around everywhere! I didn't stop at every spot though, but at least I know all the places to go. I think I'll go out there again next week, but work the river in reverse order.

Hit the "kinni" early this morning, started in River Falls. River conditions were exactly the same as last week, low and clear. I didn't see anywhere near as many trout swimming around this time though. Caught 5 brownies again, and lost about the same amount as last week though. Biggest this time was a nice chunky 12 incher. Fished a couple new spots. I was surprised at the fact I had every spot to myself today...nobody was fishing today...EXCEPT! I stopped at the parker creek access and there were like 10 cars parked there! shocked What's so special about that place? There must be some nice pools way downstream or something, because I didn't see anyone fishing.

Decided to hit kinni with my 3 year old son today after church. Only caught 1 little brownie, lost another, but we still had a lot of fun walking along the trails. Saw a couple other people catch some small ones. A lot of people kayaking.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
