kg25
Hi,I just bought a '95 Alumacraft Lunker 16 LTD (16' 9") with a '95 Mercury 40hp 2 stroke 4 cylinder on it. Last year it had new plugs, new impeller and a carb cleaning. I was wondering if anyone has experience with this motor and can give some thoughts on it.I am wanting to get a 4 stroke at some point, probably a 25hp EFI, but I want to give this motor a try and see how it goes. My previous boat was an older 14' Lund with a 30hp 2 stroke on it.Thanks for any insight!
delcecchi
This is the motor that used to be, before the rules about HP changed, called the classic 50 or something. It was the top fishing motor in its day, and is considered bullet proof.
BoxMN
Yep, great motor. Do a search as we talked about that motor in this formum before. Here is the basic info: Runs SMOOOOOOOOOOOTHHHHHHHH.... Trolls perfect speed for walleye. My '82 is still ticking, every spring and summer and fall (duck hunting till ice ice) and it has never been in shop except routine tune ups early on, now we do it our self. I can feel it getting a bit weak now, but after 30+ years, it is entitled Starting always takes one turn of key, even in spring first time, but you need to choke the snot out of it first time. This motor is THIRSTY! Gets way less fuel economy than other 2 strokes, waaaay less than 4 strokes, but it is dependable and runs the right speeds. Just bring extra gas around if on big lakes, and keep it filled up when at the dock and you will fine. Last thing, the tank needs to have the vent OPEN while running. If it is a Merc original steel tank, that little silver vent cap can rattle shut. That is first thing to check if you ever have running issues. We even just put a zip tie on ours, as it goes through gas fast enough that you don't need to worry about it collecting water I would recommend non-oxy gas for all outboards. Good luck! kg25
Thanks for the replies. Sounds like this is good reliable motor.I'll try to find the past thread about this motor also. It doesn't have the original tank, it is a 6 gallon plastic one, but I'll make sure to monitor the vent. I've only used non-oxygenated gas from Fleet Farm in my outboards and plan to continue that. Just need spring to get here so I can get it out on the water. Thanks again!
boatfixer
It is a good engine, however not the same as the 80's classic.
