G-Loomis or St.croix?

I have used both. Without a doubt, the St. Croix Avid series rods are the way to go! They are more durable and sensitive. I had more than one Loomis shatter at the base of the handle.

I just went through the same decision... I was looking mainly at the G-loomis IMX vs. the St. Croix Legend Elite and Avid series.

I ended up going with a St. Croix Avid 6'8" extra fast action Medium. I'd take a look at the xtra fast action on those, they are super sweet. I didn't realize they make the same rod in the legend elite, they didn't have that at this store. I doubt that the legend elite is worth twice as much though, the avid is just a sweet rod.

The salesman turned me away from G-loomis. I didn't see the action I liked on the loomis rods either. They don't have many of the extra fast tips. I really like that action and didn't see a quality/weight difference that was noticeable. I've heard the st.croix warranty is second to none as well.

They told me you could bring it in to the store, but they prefer you send it directly to St. Croix. $10 for return shipping and they will fix or replace your rod. That is for the life of the rod. I break at least a couple rods a year, so that should pay off in the end. Plus, they are awesome rods..

I'm sure the loomis is top notch as well, but honestly since St. Croix is manufactured in Wisconsin, they seem to recommended at least in Minnesota by most over loomis.

St. Croix and Loomis are required (BY LOOMIS AND CROIX)... at least at our retail, that EVERY warranty rod must be sent back by the consumer to the factory.

As far as a comparison between Loomis and St. Croix, I think that you have to compare model to model. I think that SOME Loomis rods are better than St. Croixs, but then there are some St. Croixs that are better than a Loomis. Depends on the series, action, and weight. You should put each rod in your hands before you make a decision.

Fenwick also has redesigned the HMG for 2003, it is much lighter, stronger, and sensitive than before. The HMG has a lifetime warranty and sells for just over $100. Check them out!

Good Luck!

I have many differnt rod Manuafactures Shimano- V rods, Shimano Compres, Fenwick Techna AV, Falcon, Cortland, St. Croix, Loomis

I believe Ross's opinion is on the money you have to compare model for model. i beleive there are alot of high quality rods listed up there. I myself wouldn't be anything other than a Loomis for the fishing I do. Imx,Glx The lighest most sensitive rod that I have ever owned.

Any of these rods you choose I'm sure you'll be happy with your purchase. All these company's have good reputations, and great warranty services.

I've always used Fenwick (all models). But, I recently started building my own rods using St.Croix blanks. I will never switch back to the Fenwick's. The St.Croix are perfect, and have a lot better action selections.

My opinion, for what it's worth, ( smallie remember you still have to fishing with me!!) All of the major rod companys have good product. I think the application your going to use the rod for is more important than the company. You don't need sensitivity for slop or top water fishing. For cranking you probably want a slow tip rather than a fast tip. Things like that. And most important is the reel you match on that rod, not all reels will feel the same on all rods. Everyones hands are differant and if you match a rod and reel combo together that creates a pinch point on your hand you will be less likely to pick that one up and use it when you should. By the way I think Quantum PT rods are hard to beat at that price point. Smallie, I just spanked the gills at my place, by the carp trap, no offense carpman.

Thanks for the different opinions guys. I own some st.croixs and have friends that swear by loomis so i thought i could get other opinions. bronzeback, my friend has made me some custom made out of st.croix blanks too. do you get them at wild river? I have had mixed results with the custom ones. Hard to beat the price on them.

just picked up a loomis IMX for worm'n... I have to say I like it better than my St. Croix Avid. It does cost more, but not a lot more... it is definitely the lighter of the two rods, both same action/weight.

I have rods from about seven different manufacturers. I obviosly cannot compare them because they are differnt models for different purposes. Im not sure what model it would be but I have a ST. croix SC3 blank that I got built. I couldnt be more pleased. This is a lighter rod that I use for finnesse. St. Croix is great for service too. Had one break last year(my bad)and there was a quick no hassle replacement, no questions asked.

Kudos to St. Croix, I finally got around to sending in the Avid flipping stick that broke on me last July. They replaced it lickity split even though the rod breaking was probably my fault. I hauled a four pounder drapped in a few weeds straight into the boat where I think during the swing the rod was forced to bend at a bad angle and "PoP".

With out a dout. ALWAYS buy and use an Uglystick-6.5 or 7.0. I have used many diffrent rods and most are good, but the uglystick is industructable and very sensitive. sometimes the inner ring of the eye can come loose. but they hold a 7 year warranty, and Shakespear will honor it.they are also very affordable. I own three of them.
I highly recomend them. If your a seriouse Bass fisherdude or dudet.
