Buying a used boat

I am kicking around the idea of buying a classic runabout, but something I could also bring my son out fishing in. The problem is I don't know anything about the process for buying, titling or registration etc. Any other tips on things to look for would be great.

Boats over 16' are titled unless they are really old. If a trailer is rated for less than 3000 lbs it can have permanent registration where you don't have to buy plates or tabs every year. Some trailers are titled some are not, if the boat or trailer is titled you need the title to transfer ownership, if not you only need a bill of sale. You need to transfer the registration on permanently registered trailers to your name. Boats are registered and titled by the DNR, trailers by the DMV. There is no sales tax in MN on boat sales by a private party, but there is sales tax if you buy from a dealer. There is sales tax on the trailer so have the price of the boat and trailer listed seperately.

These are just some basics. Stop into a DMV office and find out what you need. Boats & trailers can be a pain to get clear title to because they sometimes change hands several times without the buyers updating the title or registration.

If you are buying through a broker or dealer THEY will be able to walk you through the process. Can be a PITA but once it's done you are fine and it pays to get everything in order so when YOU get ready to sell the process is easier.

Don't worry about it too much. After all, if buying a boat was really difficult you would not see all of them on your favorite lake fishing your favorite hole!
