Malibu power steering

Recommended Posts

06 malibu, 120k miles, 3500 engine.

This is wifes car, twice this has happened. First time it was -20 out, second time it was 40 degrees out. Don't know if that matters but thought I'd throw it in for troubleshooting.

She started it up, the info center said "Power steering" and she had no power steering. I drove to where she was, started it up, everything was good. Second time this happened was the same thing. The info center said "Power steering", she had no power steering, drove it home and parked in garage. I went out, started it up, everythings good.

From what I understand this is an electric power steering pump on the steering column. I've heard some horror stories about having to replace the entire column. Is this true? I'm going to check electrical connections for corrosion and clean them up if necessary. After that, what are the troubleshooting steps to see if it's just a pump or the entire column needing replacement?

For what it's worth, I'm not very excited about replacing a column but will have it done if needed.

I've heard the same as you Eric, and my daughter has an 06 Pontiac G6 that did the same thing twice last winter but hasn't done it since. I'm using the fingers crossed at this point but the columns are not that hard to replace.

Also be sure to check your vin # because they extended the warranty on some models of the Malibu and G6 to 10 years or 150000 miles! Unfortunately, (and I dont know how) but my daughter has 170,000 already so hers isnt covered.

We had similar problems 06 Malibu Maxx 120,000 miles. Started infrequent, becoming very common. They recalled 05 models and extended warranty too I guess. Could check the ground I guess that can cause some of this, some times. Ours eventually started to make the steering wheel pulse and shake slightly if you weren't holding the wheel. I was told no fixing the column, either it works or not. End result new steering column free of charge.

Good Luck

Did a little more research Eric, and it sounds like GM won't sell anything but the column assembly. But Dorman has come out with the part separately that is very common to go bad. It's called an Electric Steering Position and Torque Sensor. This may or may not be your problem but it is the most common problem associated with these columns. It is available online in the $125 range.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
