Axel replacement difficulty?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I have a 2005 Subaru Outback Non-turbo with auto tranny, 144000 miles. The right front CV joint started clicking about 2 weeks ago. How long can I go with out damaging anything else? I would like to replace it myself. Are there any specific things to watch for? I would like to wait till it warms up some but I don't want to harm anything else by waiting to long. I watched the videos on line and it looks pretty straight forward. Are the aftermarket axles any good or should I only get OEM ones from Subaru? Any insight is greatly appreciated!!

Pretty simple to do. Remove the axle nut, separate the lower ball joint from the knuckle, push the axle out of the hub, pop the axle out of the transmission.

The most important thing to do is torque the axle nut to the proper spec when you are finished. Failure to do this will ruin the wheel bearing.

I know from experience that you have about a year in an 88 honda prelude before the joint blows apart and leaves you stranded in the middle of an intersection on your way to do some ice fishing after it starts clicking.
