Rayovac Batteries

CrappieAttitude

Question

So I just purchased a new trail camera last week and wanted to play with it a little bit in the house over the weekend. I had some brand new rayovac batteries for the kids toys and such, so I threw them in there. I was setting up all the stuff and it seemed to be working fine until I heard it make a weird sound. I was totally puzzled about what was making the sound until I opened up the battery compartment and saw grey ooze all over. The things leaked all over. Are they not meant to be used in items that require more than a few of them? I haven't messed with it since and am pretty po'd about the mess. Any one else ever expereience this with these batteries.

No, I haven't had anything like that and I use all sorts of cheap batteries.

Is it possible you either got an old dead one mixed in, or got one or more in backwards? (don't be offended, just asking to eliminate possibilities)

Some of the stuff, it isn't obvious which way the batteries go in.

For all my trail camera's, I do not run the cheapo batteries. I purchased some from the local hardware store with thier logo on the batteries and they lasted for approx 20 pics and they were dead.

I use only the best batteries I can buy for all my electronics as they will give you longer service times, at least it sure seem's that way.

The trail camera that gave me 20 pics with the private label batteries typically goes for 3 months on higher quality batteries.

Never heard of the grey glo deal.

AA battery ratings from Consumer reports. Thanks to Rochester Public Library.

The tests...

Quote:

AA batteries are the most widely sold battery type, used in digital cameras, flashlights, radios, remote controls, toys, and much more.

To find out whether you really need to buy expensive brand-name batteries to keep your gadgets up and running, we tested both alkaline and lithium batteries.

How we tested

To measure how long AA batteries lasted, testers loaded them into digital cameras, a typically high-drain device, and flashlights, a low-drain device. For cameras, the test mimicked everyday use by zooming, flashing, shooting, and resting until the batteries died.

The longest-lasting lithium battery took 609 shots before dying, while the quickest to die, an alkaline, took just 49.

For flashlights, the test included turning on a flashlight for 4 minutes every hour for 8 hours, and then letting the flashlight sit for 16 hours. Testers repeated this routine until the batteries died. The best batteries in our tough test (again, a lithium) could last 7.3 hours. The best alkaline, which cost about half as much, lasted almost as long, 6.8 hours. The worst in the flashlight test (an alkaline) made it to only about 4 hours.

They didn't give information about the numerical score calculation. Sorry.

Over the last 2 years I have had 3 different items ruined by cheap batteries. 2 Flashlights and a GPS. 2 items were replaced by the E battery company, but Rayovac never even answered my complaint. Don't know what has changed in batteries, but the cheaper ones seem to leak all the time.
