Anyone seen that new Shappell bay runner shack

Never seen one of these bad boys in person but seems interesting. compact and sealed fabric and you don't have to have your feet or electronics on the ice. thinking about finding/buying one of these and dragging it behind my vehicle since you don't need to "flip" anything or make a snow pack seal around the fabric. seems like a win win right? opinions?

I stumbled across it about 5 days ago. I love it and if I could find a place around me I would be very tempted to buy one. Now if Otter or Canvas Craft was making it on there Large sled (44"x85") or Magnum, with the insulated tent I would be going nuts trying to get one! My otter xt1200 is great but I like the idea of having a floor and the shelf to put your electronics on. Also being able to leave it set up and pull it with my wheeler or snowmobile would make turn me into more of a hole hopper, rather then being too lazy to move. For the times of the year with no snow you wouldn't have to worry about banking the tent skirting like on other portables. Shappell great idea but it needs an insulated tent, Otter, CC let's see something like this in your lineup next season!

I agree! I sat there starring at the screen when stumbled across it on their HSOforum and i couldn't believe there isn't already an insulated version or another entry by otter, frabill or clam out there.. Either no snow, or packed snow. Both are annoying, also not having the heater melt the ice around your feet (my situation anyway) by having it raised also! the whole thing seems genius and portable, no collapsing poles and no garbage frozen on the ice since it stays in the sled!

Nice thanks for the heads up, I am considering a new shack next year and don't really need/ want a thermal tent plus the price seems reasonable.

Will have to see in person to understand how it does collapse though for truck storage etc...

Look on YouTube there's a few vids of it going up and down. I'm probably responsible for 50% of the views on them grin

How do they anchor?.looks like a good wind and you could set the lake speed record in that baby. Agree on the thermal.

For my use it would be hitched to my sled of wheeler but if not just use the pull rope and a screw in anchor like the pop ups use.

Excellent, I didn't even think of you tube. Right on. Off topic sort of-----I once fixed my buddys BMW that was stuck in park with a you tube fix. No interlock or other simple fix, we had to tow it to his home as it snaps a stupid plastic piece inside the floor shift console and the dealer wants 1500 to fix and the part is over 600 bucks. You tube and two hours time he was fixed up and ready to go for just our time spent.(Aged ribeyes & beer were bought by said friend without a second thought)

I continue to forget the vids man....Got to keep it foremost in mind. Lesson is if you don't know the exact procedure, yup...you tube it!

I also was wondering about really gusty days as I have no wheeler or other, but thought the weight of a 20# propane and gear might keep' er stable. But the popup anchors would be key to just have with in case of super crazy conditions. Good idea.

I would think some snow would enter the house when pulling across the lake...? I see the hole doors but wouldn't think they could seal tight enough.

Looks to me as though they zipper up, so it should keep anything out.

Also this looks to be a sporty feature also as it has an entry door on each side from what I read.

THANKS FOR THE POST! personally I love the idea of sled type portables and i hate having a swimming pool around my feet because of the heater i like to use. I have been trying to think of idea for a semi permanent portable for a long time and this is about the best i have seen.

this is a awesome idea! like the fact you can leave it up and a BIG plus not having to bank. Personally i think this would be the ultimate portable if using a wheeler or sled. The price sure is right but if they made a insulated version i really think they would have a winner!

First time I have seen this and again thanks for the post!

It doesn't look like it has a back rest on the bench? That's the only deal breaker for me. With that and a thermal shell this would be the ideal design for a 1 man portable.

Maybe a small velcro or zippered area in the front to run a heater hose through would be a good idea as well, although I'm sure you could just put the tank under the bench.

My bad Dave, Good point. It looks like they latch down but tight enough to prevent snow/slush/water from swamping it, I dont know. Will have to actually see in person after all I guess.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
