troutman
I just purchased a Nils power auger.I haven't received it yet but,the one thing I didn't look into was it's ability to or rather,if it's advisable to open old holes with it.My guess is that it's not recommended. What are your thoughts and experiences. Thanks
hamms-scooter
I would speak with frank on this one. He had a video on here with the ice hogger system on it drilling in a perm shack worked awesome from what I saw. I have never reopened any with my Nils so can't help you there I can tell you you will love the unit! The Tanaka is awesome and super light weight. If you find the Nils isn't the way to go for reopening talk with Bee on here he will make an adapter for you to run a mora hand auger on your powerhead . I had one made in case I am going somewhere with high traffic the road buggers from trucks will kill your nils blade. Frank will more then likely give you some good advice. Bass Chaser
Troutman I am a new Niles user. Made my way to the ice this weekend for the first time and I have to say that the Niles is the way to go if you are looking for a new auger or your first auger. The Tanaka motor was a 2 pull affair and I was running and drilling. Drilling holes was like using a hot knife in butter. You do not have to push on the Niles to drill the holes it does it all by its self, you just hold on and go for the ride!!! I have owned Jiffy and Strikemaster and I can say this is the best auger I have owned!!!! Looking for a long ice season and drilling many holes!!! Niles has my vote for best auger!!! shamrock7
They open old holes just fine. Just set them on the ice gently. If you set the bit onto the ice with any carelessness, you will find that they will not cut well. Send it to Surface Tension and he will fix it up
slurpie
The auger is great. Worst part is all the slush left in the hole. Having used a nils a strikemaster dual blade and seen a chipper blade in use. If you reopen a ton of holes I think I would have a chipper bit. Surface Tension
I use my Nils to open old holes in the perm. It works just as well if not better then any other type blade. The shape of Nils the blade guides it. Depending on how much the hole froze over, it will go just like a new hole or you might have to lift it once in a while to slow the feed. I'd have to do the same thing if I use my SM chipper blade too. IMO the biggest concern is keeping the hole clean and free from dirt.If you have hole covers use them when you sweep the floor of the perm out. That ice hogger works slick when you get into thicker ice and chips have nowhere to go but on the floor of the shack. I shoot them into a tote but there are other products out there that work too.
