Legal question regarding shooting

Recommended Posts

Is there any law governing how far away you must be from a public road when target shooting? I know when hunting, you must be at least 500 feet away from a building, but a buddy told me he believes there is also a law stating how far from a road you must be. I don't believe this to be true, especially considering the State goose hunting blinds in Rochester are literally in the road ditches. I can't find anything in the hunting regulations.

This is out of the DNR hunting booklet.

• On another person’s private land or a public right-of-way, a person

may not take a wild animal with a firearm within 500 feet of a building

occupied by humans or livestock without written permission of the

owner, occupant or lessee of the building. A person may hunt from the

water or from public land that is within 500 feet of a building occupied

by humans or livestock.

• A person may not take a wild animal with a firearm within 500 feet of a

corral containing livestock without permission.

Also the 500 ft rule doesn't apply during water fowling, and I also believe that the only time you can shoot from a road right of at is at water fowl ,except during the early and late goose season.

I also read that to mean if you are hunting on public land, the 500 ft rule doesn't apply.
