How's Opening Weekend Going?

Recommended Posts

I sat this year out also. Word from camp was SLOW. 1 small buck and about a dozen does and fawns all passed on for 3 guys. Most does were bedded and jumped on the way to stand for afternoon sit. Not much movement from all the other reports from friends spread around NW region.

We hunted over near Bruce last weekend and didn't hear a lot of shots but both days the 3-5 pm hours were when most of the shooting took place around us. My daughter sat with me and she hunted while I accompanied her. Saw 3 does sat am, 6 does Sat pm, nothing Sunday am, small six and a couple does Sunday pm. My son sat with my father in law and didn't hunt Sat am, Saturday pm he shot a nice 8 point with a 15" spread and 6 inch tines that we figured at 3.5 years old at about 4 pm. My father in law and son went back to the cabin to get the tractor and came back and there were 3 does feeding right near where the buck had fallen when they were driving up. Sunday am they stayed in the warmth and slept in and Sunday night about 430 my son shot a nice sized doe. My daughter is headed back to the cabin Thursday night with my father in law for the weekend. She has her sights set on a large 8 we call the chocolate 8 or another buck that hangs on the tip of the property we call tiparillo. One guy in our party shot a small 6 Sunday afternoon a bout 230, the rest of the guys saw some does and smaller bucks but didn't shoot.

Hunted in the Barnes area. I shot a mature dry 140lb doe Largest I have ever seen . It was the only deer I saw for the season. I hunted the 1st 2 days and the last 3. IT was the least amount of shots I have ever heard on opener. We heard 6 all day that's it. The registration station had only registered 254 deer as of 1pm Sun the 1st. Lowest ever. I had only 3 deer tracks in the fresh snow all at night and all had wolves join up with and the chase was on I did not follow to see what happened. That doe was my first kill in 5 seasons. I almost feel guilty taking it. It was alone and was barren after checking its bag. Most of the camps in the area got no deer and cleared out early this year. I have been hunting the area since 1976 and this is the least amount of shooting I have ever heard. I knew it would be poor as all summer we saw more bears on the roads than deer sightings. It used to challenging driving up to the cabin from the Cities it was a true obstacle course of deer from Gordon to Barnes Spooner to Minong etc. Now it is rare for me to see a deer on the road. You are more likely to see a bear May thru October. Deer were not even on the roads during the rut. I wonder if the extreme amount of predators is also compounded with a disease outbreak. I am not seeing the amount of hunters archery or gun in the last 5 or 6 years and the harvest records will show they are not being shot. Where are they. We did a lot of driving Saturday afternoon and there are not many tracks in the snow anywhere.

I took off yesterday, hunting every day taking the pm off on turkey day. Saw 13 mostly does and fawns. camp ended with 8, 3 bucks and 5 does. 4 of those deer came on Friday, not sure why but there was a lot more shooting Friday than on opener. There is definitely less deer than the good old days but we worked hard and did OK. First year for a 12 yo in camp ended taking a doe, great experience to be a part of. I could tell folks gave up early, after opener we had public woods to ourselves. North of Hayward.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
