Fixing a broken Antler point?

Any one ever fix a broken off antler point? When pulling my sons buck off the deer carrier the head hit the drive way and broke off about 2-3" of one tip. Thought I heard someone once try epoxy and then maybe some wood stain to blend in the patch crack areas? Anyone else ever fix one? frown

I have fixed numerous one's for other people. I drill a smalle hole in the end of each broken off piece. The I run a wires into each end with a 2 part epoxy, you can get them to look like they never broke.

if you lost the one piece that is broken off, I use critter clay to model a new one, then drill the holes in each end and epoxy them together. Then I use a antler stain to match the color to the rest of the rack.

Not that hard to do but a little time consuming.

I had a taxidermist fix one once for me. He used a similar process as Harvey Lee with holes and a stiff wire epoxied in place. I think he used something to smooth out the fix (maybe wood filler or bondo, but I don't know??). Then he stained it. The tine was lost on this one, but he used part of a shed antler for the replacement piece.

Here is a before and after. It's very difficult to see without knowing the fix is there.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I was in the middle of replying last night when the site took a dump. It had two breaks. The first few inchs broke clean but the second inch broke down the middle more of a flake. I will give these ideas a shot. Matt, that fix on yours looks great! smile

A good clear/white epoxy will do the job and if you need to add color to get it to match the antler the acrylic colors that they mix paint with like at hardware stores will help in that department, you don't need much and add until you get the color you want might take a coup0le of different colors to color match that antler.
