Laminate floor transition gap Q's

How much gap can you get away with when laying a Laminate floor?

I'm going from an old hardwood floor into an old vinyl and laying Laminate over both. Will the pad take up the gap ok or just try and not have any short ends in that area? confused Also, it will be the plywood composite flooring used which is a little stiffer but real wood.

I'd throw some bondo or something similar into the low spot just so the flooring doesn't have to bridge the gap as it may get squeaky and a heavy persons heel in the exact right spot may break or crack a tongue off. I'd also try to keep joints to a minimum in that area

I take it your going over the oak right on to the OSB??If so just double up the pad for the first 1-2 feet on the OSB where it dont align with the oak's height.it wont be noticed and will transition in unnoticed.Or sand the oak down 1/2 the difference back about 1 ft along with the double pad for a ft.on the OSB.

If you grind down the hardwood floor that might screw up any plans in the future to refinish them. Of coarse now I'll have to say you should refinish the hardwood floor instead of going over it with a lam. smile A new vinyl floor in the kitchen.

If you must continue with the lam then use a floor leveler on the vinyl and feather it back.

Don't smear any on the wood.

Frank, believe me we would liked to have saved the orignal wood floors and we had hoped to also find it in the kitchen when we pulled the carpet and orignal kitchen flooring up. Put the previous owners had nails and screws all over under them to stop squeaks and it was a mess. So, we are going over it all with Lam.

Dips and transition gaps that are very minor such as you have,I typically just double up on the pad and taper out. Just DT it down or double sided carpet tape it. Spread mud if you like but consider if down the road you might do a change again you'll have some clean up. If done proper and its minor you can do this trick and it will solve the bounce/deflextion on your floating floor. If nail down, then even better. Plus its a little more cost effective. *Sorry, someone else already suggested*
