GoPro camera

I'm considering getting a GoPro Black edition to mount in the dark house and to film some deer hunting trips. I also would use it for a dash camera in my semi.

I'm not real up on things like this but I've been doing some looking around. From what I am reading they do not have a zoom feature. I would think this would be a fairly important. How do they perform in low light conditions.

Anyone on here have one and how do you like it?

since the main goal of the Go-Pro cameras is to capture view of the user you want a very wide angle lens which is what they have

if you were to wear the Go-Pro while you're doing sports, driving, etc. with the lens zoomed it wouldn't look right and would be awful jumpy

if you want to shoot close-ups, say for example deer, I think you'd be better off just getting a conventional video camera with a nice zoom

wish I would have had a Go-Pro about 30 years ago when I was doing all sorts of crazy action sports! I would have had a blast with it

I bought one last winter to leave in the spear hole to record some action but I didn't have the new one with the wifi on it. I couldn't leave it run very long because it takes such hi def video that the card would fill up too fast and I didn't have a way to turn it on and off. I just bought the wifi control for the hero 2 that you can control with your smart phone and it works really well. I can't wait to try it in the spear house. It seems to do pretty well in low light and down the spear hole from what little I have played with it.

They actually do perform really well in a confined setting like a dark/fish house. Better than most conventional cameras would. That wide angle Stick mentioned, lends itself well to this type shot; yes, a more conventional camera would zoom better, but almost too good and then miss a lot periphery. Think I got the silver, cant remember why, but was tentative to use phone app last winter though; am now gun shy of taking out my phone anywhere near an ice hole....lost one as well as a Wifi device within a couple months of each other....they seem to defy gravity when finding that hole, and yours would be a lot bigger wink They handle low light well, but you will still need some. For a little reference, this shot was taken a few nights ago with cloud cover....about five minutes after official sundown.

I have the black edition with the wi fi remote and I love it. I use it for everything, and when I have it on my boat I have it on the console or motor.

im supper excited to see how it will work in the spear house.

I would like to use it to film Mollie shooting a deer and not sure how well that would work without a zoom feature. Just to be clear I want to film the deer not her.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
