Trapping Roadways

Recommended Posts

There are more ditches where dogs are unlikely to be than the opposite.

For coon, get some dog proof traps. This year I'll be trapping all private land for predators, I just don't want to risk catching someones pet(as I trap near towns). I hunt with a dog, and all I wish is that other trappers wouldn't set traps near areas where you know people with dogs hunt. Also, make sure that if you do set in ditches you are following the laws to the T. Not that you shouldn't always, but the regs are different for trapping public land vs private.

1. Get some regs, and memorize them!

2. Focus on culverts and bridges

No matter where you set a trap there is a chance to catch a dog or cat. So I set away from areas of people and domestic animals if I can. I always carry everything to release unwanted animals. And if I ever do catch a dog with tags or collar, I try to find the owner. In 50 years of trapping I have only had to release 3 dogs and they were a mile away from houses.

Just curious, If you've been trapping for 50 years, why did you ask what the regs were and for ideas? Most everyone I know that has been trapping that long has got very solid idea of how to trap and what the laws are...

I do not trap roadways in populated areas, and have been trapping them forever. My post was looking for new ways to trap them and if there were any new rules not in the manual. Everyone get's so fired up over things on here anymore!
