Wet weather pheasants

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any luck hunting pheasants after some serious rain days? There is a lot of standing water across MN and ND right now and I'm curious if the birds would gang up in obviously dry spots, or if they will be scattered...

I've hunted the last 2 evenings after work specifically because it was so wet and the dog's nose works so good in this weather. Tonight I was on a WMA and caught the birds moving from the corn and into the willows/cattails, so they certainly weren't looking for dry areas to roost in, although what we see as wet, they probably easily find the little humps and mounds that stay dry. I flushed over 30 birds tonight which was a very nice surprise given the forecast for pheasant numbers.

went out last night, public land after the rain. was still a steady drizzle. in an hour and a half, we saw 4 roosters and 2 hens! great night! the birds are there!!!!! the piece we were on was even surrounded by corn. boots are still soaked! fun hunt for sure!

they will be in the typical areas just like any other day and once they know your there they will resort to any area of cover regardless if there is water or not.

I have worked running birds that eventually flushed in knee high water because they were perched on downed cattails or tree branches.

In the evening they will also stick around the road a littler longer when they pick gravel to dry off. I am not a fan of road hunting but know a lot of folks that will just drive gravel roads after a rain.
