BobT
I have been having some difficulty with an HP mini netbook. It keeps locking up or freezing occasionally. The only way to get it working is to do a hard shutdown and reboot. The other day when I did this I decided to reboot in safe mode and then run a virus scan. I had just completed a scan with it running in normal mode but thought I would try it anyway. The software found 78 errors. The jury is still out whether that solved my problem but it raises additional questions. 1. Anyone else have similar issues with system freezing or suggested ways to figure out what is causing them?2. Is it good practice to occasionally boot up in safe mode and run virus scans?Windows 7 Starter2GB RamAVG 2013 free versionThanks,
Whoaru99
If you need to try to identify something that's running on your computer that may be causing it, you can use "msconfig" to turn off items in the startup tab.You can just type "msconfig" in the Search Programs and Files box. BobT
Thanks. This is an intermittent problem so it would be difficult to decide how long to leave some application turned off. I already have the startup files at about a minimum I dare take them as far as I can tell. I do know that since I ran that scan in safe mode, the problem has not returned but like I said, it is an intermittent problem so I can't say for sure. upnorth
If your system will run without the app running(other than AV anti malware and the like) it doesn't need to start up. I would suspect a drive issue. Windows update will sometimes pull down a krappy driver and best to go to the devices vendor site and download a new driver and install it.
