My Son was drawn again this year ! Its a great time and probably the best hunt we do all year ! My advice if I was asked for some would be by a paper Map They sell at orientation. I recived some great advice from Musky and a few others Last year for our First time out. Go Back a year and look at those threads. These guys are a great help here.

My son was drawn again. I don't know who is more excited, him or me. ...especially since we didn't get drawn for the big hunt this year.

Last year he was fortunate enough to take a nice doe. Of course he is hoping for one of those big "Ripley" bucks this year. Regardless if he gets a deer, it will be fun!

I can't say enough good things about the people that run it and volunteer their time for it...other than a huge Thank you!

Nels

We were Lucky enough to have had a 180ish Ripley Monster at 80 yards last year but if you rememember It was a tad windy and the swirling winds got us and he wandered off. I have a 10 pointer on the wall at home and this deer made mine look like a yearling. It was so exciting. I agree with Nels . The people that run that hunt are awesome and really treat everyone so Nice. I do have a question. Last year we Camped in the Pop Up. But we were thinking of doing a motel this year. I Snore terrible so I don’t want to do the Barrack thing for fear of ticking off the Poor SOB sleeping near us. Does anyone stay in a cheap motel near the Base ? I was going to look into it today a little.

Eyes.....just talked to the Housing folks here on Ripley. If you wanted to stay in their Maid Service rooms, you can call them and reserve rooms. That would keep you right here on post and you wouldn't have to wake up the entire barracks with your nose thunder. Not sure what the rooms run, but they aren't terribly expensive. Probably less than a motel.

Hey Musky,

My son drew again this year also. I exchanged with you a couple times in 2011, thanks for that advice also!

Is it too much for me to call about the maid service rooms? I didn't want to if that invite was a 'personal' invite. We also stayed in a camper last time, but it is a lot of work to pull our 34 footer up there...

No....not a personal invite at all. Its open to anyone that wants to utilize it. Was just directing it towards Eyes as he had originally asked.

320-616-3140 is the number to the front desk at Housing. Give em a call and I am sure they can hook ya up!

I doubt that the area will change for the Youth hunt as the disabled veterans hunt is being conducted at the same time on the south end of camp. They use firearms,so they like to keep a buffer zone.

There are 150 slots open for veterans. I have been hunting it for 4 years now, and we have never had everyone show up. I believe the most we have had for a hunt was 87. From Casino Road north is still a very large area of land to hunt for that number of people.

Do you sit with the kid when you hunt this or use a separate stand or ground blind? Seems like it would be crowded even with a 2 person stand and I have other stands and a ground blind.

We use two climbers. Another option we use is one climber and a ladder stand, sometimes on the same tree.

It's all personal choice.

The deployed soldier hunt runs Sep 30 - Oct 2. We hunt from Casino Road and north. At the same time, the disabled veterans hunt the southern portion of Camp. The disabled hunt is a couple of days longer than the deployed soldiers hunt, so they continue to hunt the south end of camp while the Youth hunt takes place on the north end of camp. Didn't mean to confuse anyone. Sorry

Thanks for some clarification, but are those last year's dates?

The youth hunt is October 12th & 13 th this year. ..?

It would be nice if Ripley could rotate the areas better to avoid hunting the same ground back to back.

Either way, the volunteers do a great job and we appreciate it!

Getting off subject, but the veterans hunt is now open to ALL branches of service and not just MN national guard. Kinda sucks to hear the hunt was never full when it was only offered to members of the national guard.

I know it is too late to register for it this year, but will be keep in mind for next year.

Yeah they changed it so they could possibly get all the slots filled. Last year there was 135 slots and only 79 hunters showed up I believe. This year there was 150 slots and I think the number of applicants was 120. Out of that 120, figure 30% won't show up. So with all the land on the north end of camp, there isn't nearly enough guys hunting to truly spoil the areas for the youth hunt. Hope that everyone (vets and youth) score big time!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
