Outboard thermostat

I have recently bought a boat and motor, motor is a 1981 35HP Johnson Model J35RCIG. I have no owners or parts manuals.(anyone have a spare) Doing an online search I found some motors have thermostats and some do not. How do I know if this one has one and/or where would it be found. If it has one do they work like a vehicles (opens and lets water through after warm up) When I start it water squirts right away, which isn't a bad thing but it don't run smooth till good and warm. Thought maybe stat is stuck open and not warming soon enough. Any help here guys?

Thanks much.

Find someone with a schematic and ask.

My 82 Johnson had a thermostat but it was bigger. Freaked me out in the spring when no water would come out until it opened up.

Not sure if the smaller motors had one.

THanks for the help surfacetension

All outboards have thermostats right from the smallest HP to largest,The telltale is bypassed around the stat and comes out from the water jacket as a way to see water is pumped.Stats seldom go bad, some do but seldom.
