Slimdart
Is there a minimum age limit to the youth waterfowl hunt. My son is too young for fire arm safety but he handles his 20ga. Pretty well he loves to go out in the blind with me and I would like for him to be able to pull the trigger.
jblabsnduck
I am not 100% sure but if I remember right your kid has to have the hunter safety when they are tweleve years of age but can hunt anytime with out it before tweleve. (little loop hole)Best bet is to call the DNR and ask them to make sure.
ribsey_77
They can be any age their parents seem fit. My boy is 8 and will be enjoying his second year!
Slimdart
Thanks for the reply. This confirms what I thought. He just turned 8, last year he shot a couple of grouse hopefully this year he can scratch off a couple of ducks. He is hoping for a wood duck
fishersofmen
My son is pumped up big time for the youth hunt. He has been walking around in his waders for 2 weeks even when its 100 degrees.
Slimdart
its amazing how one duck ranks up there with the best hunts of my life. My son just turned eight a couple of week ago I took him out hoping to get some teal or young ducks to sit down in the decoys for an easier shot. He has been anxious about shooting a bird in the sky so the last couple of weeks we have been working on that. Not much was flying and I was starting to worry about our prospects. I look behind us and see a couple of mallards flying down the shoreline and I told him to get ready. He shoulders his gun and I told him not yet. I hear him click his safety off. I tell him "OK Take Em" I hear a boom and one of the mallards is dead instantly folds up and falls into the cattails. I send the dog and he brings back my sons drake mallard. He looks at me like "yep that's how its suppose to work". His first shot water fowling resulted in a drake mallard that was flying no less. I was impressed and proud. fishersofmen
Ha ha yea he got to sweat in them on Saturday too. He ended up with a goose and a mallard. He missed a lot of birds but I was proud and it was a blast. I just keep telling him he will get more and more confident with his shot as time goes by..... Congrats to all the youth who went out, and the folks who took them. We had 4 little girls goose hunting (not a "youth hunt" though), and they shot their BB guns at targets and had a ball while we waited for honkers! Only one goose fell, and they loved going out to get it
fishuhalik
Awesome guys! My son just turned 7 & I don't think he'll be quite ready next year, but you better believe he'll be joining me as soon as he can! I can't wait!!
Slimdart
Ok so now he is hooked and wants to come out with us on opener. Here is the situation my son, a buddy and myself will be going out on opener. My son would like to bring his gun. My question is can he do that and will he be shooting towards my limit of birds which is cool with me. But I also know here is no waterfowl party hunting. I have been scouring the DNR web page but have had difficulties finding what I am looking for. If anyone can point me in the right direction or know the rules on this it would be appreciated. Wouldn't you know it that as soon as I asked the question I found the answer. For those of you like me that didn't know. Waterfowl is considered under the same rules as other small game. Youth can carry there own firearm and shoot their own limit.
