Motor Cuts Out When Engaging It

First time on water this year was memorial day weekend & I finally was able to get the boat wet this am.

between this I had a new fuel pump installed to (hopefully) remedy an issue of motor stalling out at higher speeds. Today it would only sit at idle, every time I tried to put it in gear it died/cut out. really peed me off.

cable linkage issue? gear issue? dropped it off at shop on way home but am curious as to opinions. just miffed & hope it aint related to new fuel pump

And yes, could definitely be as simple as idle too low

They still use those interrupter things when shifting? Could that be misadjusted?

Just had the same issue with my motor. Would run inidel but as soon as I put it in either fw or rev it would die. The carb was fouled and they had to replace the needle valves. Runs like a champ now. It is a 1987 50hp Merc.

$300 for parts, labor and taking boat out on the lake to ensure that everything is fine. All I know is I have the wrong job for what they charge for labor!

thx steamman, that was it, a needle stuck/gummed up, they just took couple of hours to clean & and good to go. not a horrible bill
