MIDNIGHT777
I have been kicking around the idea of getting a smaller used 5th wheel to have the ability to tow my boat behind (double tow). I am well aware of the length and weight limits. My question is about the boat I would tow and if it would be to heavy. I have never actually weighed it, but have been told by others with same set up that it comes in at about 4000 lbs. is there a weight limit on the 5th wheels as to how much weight they can have hooked to them, is it different for different 5th wheels??Just wondering if it even possible. I have seen several outfits in double tow mode, but never seen one with a boat the weight of mine.....Thanks, Matt
aanderud
I haven't done this, but lots of guys say they reinforce the 5th wheel trailers with steel, as they often times are just lightweight aluminum not well-suited for the added stress of the towing. Also keep in mind that towing and frame modifications will almost certainly void your 5th wheel trailer warranty (if you have one). Not a problem if you get something already out of warranty but certainly wouldn't advise it on a new unit. You did say you were looking used so I'm guessing this won't be an issue for you but figured I'd mention it, as I have seen it discussed elsewhere. highlife4me
The factory installed rear hitch on my fifth wheel is only rated to tow 3000 lbs. and 300 Lb hitch weight. I am sure you could install a heavier hitch but then you will need to look closely at the capacity of the trailer. Many RV companies will void the warranty if a trailer hitch is installed on a camper. If you look under some of the newer campers and inspect the frames you will see why.
