WalleyeDrifter
I'm building an ugly drum smoker and need to buy a thermometer. Will a thermometer designed to monitor grease temperatures in a deep fat fryer work? Any suggestions on where to pick up a thermometer for the smoker? My plan is to have 1 thermometer on the cover of the smoker and another with a longer probe about 2 inches below my meat rack. Any other suggestions are welcome. McGurk
I have 2) 12" deep fryer thermos in mine, 1) just below each grate. You can get them at menards for around $10 each I think. I also used a small brass fitting from the gas line section that is threaded on both sides with a hole in the center for the probe. It is a "1/8 NPT to 3/8 compression adapter". I did have to drill it out with a 1/8" bit as it was just a bit small for the probe. This is a pic of it, and it is the brass one on the bottom. thirdeye
I use 12" thermometers in my drums too. I get much more dependable readings as the 3" stem ones I have in the side read about 40° lower than the reading I get in the center of the drum.
