Thoughts on the 39

I would think that Harvick's spot will be taken by the oldest grandson, Austin Dillon. Burton is still under contract and Menard just re-signed. The only way RCR will expand to a 4th team is if they can acquire a sponsor.

I wonder if Penske would expand to a third team and then look at bringing back Newman? Not sure if there was any bad blood there when he left or not.

I thought they were going to give Austin 1 more year in the nationwide series and Ty one more year in the truck series. I had also heard that the 78 owners were talking about expanding to a 2 car team as well.

RCR is in transition with Kevin Harvick leaving for Stewart-Haas Racing after this season. Paul Menard recently signed a deal that should keep him with the team through 2016, and Jeff Burton said he has a long-term deal, which likely means he also will return in 2014.

Childress grandson Austin Dillon is expected to be in a Cup car — and Childress has said he’s leaning toward putting him in a No. 3 — but that might not be all for RCR in Cup in 2014.

“Right now we're finalizing some final things,” Childress said Monday during a teleconference previewing this weekend’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “We have sponsorship on a third (car) and we actually have some sponsorship on a fourth.

“But having it all finalized and put together, it could be a couple of months down the road before we have everything ready to do some announcing on any of that.”

With Dillon expected to move from the Nationwide Series, Childress would need to find another driver for a fourth Cup time. The possibilities could include Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman, who is looking for a ride after Stewart-Haas announced recently that he won’t return next season.

To get Dillon ready for Cup, Childress already has had him compete in six Cup races this year in addition to his full-time Nationwide schedule. Dillon also will compete at Indianapolis this weekend as well at Atlanta and Texas.

“I'm really, really proud to be there (at Indy) with him and to be able to watch him run that race,” Childress said.

Eventually, Childress plans to have both of the Dillon brothers — 23-year-old Austin and 21-year-old Ty — racing full Cup schedules.
