Is it to late?

Is it to late to plant a garden for the year? My 4 year old asked me the other day if we could have a garden this year. I asked him what he wanted, he said green beans, water melon, carrots, and pumpkins. I figured if we have on I will add peppers and tomatoes.

You should still have plenty of time to plant at least some stuff. Haven't done much in the way of melons/pumpkins but green beans, tomatoes, peas, etc should still have plenty of time. You could probably plant carrots but I'm not sure how big they'll get by picking time. Make sure to plant them in a very loose soil to give them the best chance. I add a lot of peat moss to the soil I plant carrots in.

I haven't planted pumpkins before, even though my son and daughter have asked (don't have the space) but we have planted carrots with success. Last year our carrot transplants died and I didn't get seeds planted in the garden until July but we still had fun sized little carrots by harvest that the kids loved. (they are 3 and 5 years old)

What a great way to get kids involved. Plant something they like with success! smile Definitely not too late for lots of things. Have planted early green beans July 4th and they were great in September. Very tender, very sweet. Sweet corn works planted until the end of June reliably. Tomatoes and peppers will work. I'm sure zucchini will grow as will cukes. Getting plenty late for most pumpkins, watermelon and winter squash especially if you have to wait a week for ground to dry out. If the weather turns around I may try a few hills of early muskmelon, something in the 70 - 75 day range. There still is a window of opportunity for things like peas, lettuce and radishes planted the last week in July into early August. Been playing with them here now for a couple years and it works when the weather cooperates. When it doesn't you need to be on the stick with the water.

Watermelon is kind of a long/hot season grower isn't it? I'm not sure they would make it, but I don't have any experience with them either.

You'd still have a shot at carrots, but as stated above, get em' into light/fluffy soil, and I'd add, keep em' damp/moist until they germinate. If you can get em' to germinate quickly you could still get some nice fresh carrots by end of season...which with carrots can be well into September or even October (they're some tough buggers! ;)).

With a 4 yr. old you wanna keep gardening fun. They love to dig in the dirt, play with the bugs and worms, and copiously water everything. When our kids were little they always wanted to be in the garden with us. We lovingly referred to each of them as, "Noise, with dirt on it." laugh

Yup, watermelons are a longer/warm season beast. My luck with them has been mixed, even in good seasons. Last year they were OK but certainly nowhere compared to the cantaloupe. Watermelons like well drained soil and when my rotation puts them in an area of the garden that tends to be wetter, it doesn't work as well. 3 or 4 years ago, they were impressive.

If you plant now you will still get a modest yeild... If we have a warm fall you could get a good yield. The only thing about planting this late is that you won't get a bumper crop.

Stay away from cold weather stuff like Spinach, Onions and lettuce as they will bolt to seed before you can harvest in the warm summer weather to come.

It is probably still OK to plant watermelons and cantalope.Buy plants only.Go to a greenhouse and look for sugar baby or yellow doll watermelons.Put down some black plastic and then cut holes in to put in the melon plants.Goddess is a great early cantalope if you can find it.

Same for Tomatoes. The late ones like big boy etc may not make it.Look for Early Girl or New girl....something that ripens in 60-65 days or less.

See if you can find pumpkin and squash plants. Also not to late to plant zuchinni, summer squash,or cucumbers.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
