Rod Repair

Recommended Posts

I have a 7' G Loomis I had custom made 7 or 8 yrs ago. Long story short, it's now about 6'6". Set the hook on a fish and the butt end broke about 6" up from the end. Is there anyway to repair it? Possibly sleeve over the end up to the rod seat? dam nice jig rod, hate to give it up!!!

the butt broke? seriously...

your custom builder should know to run the blank all the way through the handle. because if you don't, the butt will break off when somebody sets the hook 8 years later. Your rod was supposed to be 6' 6"

There are lots of things you could do. A sleeve, some sort of splint and a new piece of cork, etc, etc. those options would probably involve a bunch of electrical tape and look like hell though.

I would try to cut off the remaining cork up to the reel seat, find a section of rod blank that will stick in the hollow end of the loomis blank - preferably a tight fit - and epoxy it in place. then ream out a new section of cork and slide it up from the butt end with a bunch of epoxy. Then glue on a new buttcap.

I agree with Bobby. Something don't seem right. Normally the blank extends through the handle and if it broke that way something strange happened. There are options. But more details would help before we all start talking about something that just isn't the way it is.

Did the blank extend through the handle?

Did the blank snap off?

Did he use some sort an extender?

Can the extender be replaced/repaired?

If you still have both pieces get yourself a carbon bowfishing arrow cut it to about 8 inches (a regular arrow might work too depending on the diameter) build it with arbors on both ends to match the inside daimeter. add some rod building epoxy slide the arrow in the butt of the handle part 4 inches, slide the other end into the rod clamp together tightening the cork to the point where you cant tell (assuming its all there of course...) let dry and walla. might add a small amount of weight but should be more than strong enough.

Your just north east of me by what 12 miles or so, email me some pics of what your dealing with, depending on if that would work or not I could prob have you up and fishing by monday....(assuming what i think your saying is what I think your saying.)

Email is [email protected] im in New Prague.

This was a 7 blank. it broke between the reel seat and the end. When it broke, it was real ragged break. I did clean it up, and actually put a pc of PVC over the broken end, and yes, it looks like hell with tape, but it still is usable, but would like to know of a better wat to fix it.
