Kyle
Anyone have any great ideas on what to use for fish house ski's? I want to build a shack this summer but can't afford a drop down trailer. I used to have a skid house but it was too big to be on skids and didn't move well. I want to build 6x8 and want it to move like butter even in deep snow. I also need to be able to tow it around the lake with a snow mobile. I'm willing to purchase metal for making ski's if need be. Thanks
Smoker
I have seen a lot with a pipe for the skies. Just heat up the ends and bend them up. A friend of mine has one like that and pulls it with his snowmobile as long as the snow isn't to deep.
leech~~
I seen a guy use old plastic water skis with the fin off, it seemed to keep the house up on the snow well, but you have to build it light if your going to try pulling it with a sled! Gordie
I would use steel tubing and cap the ends, but make the caps removable because if it ever froze in you can use a weed burner torch or some charcoal lighter fluid and heat the inside of the tubes up and pull it free with no problems. I have done this myself and it works great. A 6x8 should be light enough to pull around with a snow machine until you get a bunch of snow, but by then you should be able to use a truck.Round pipe works well, but you will have to use like angle iron to make a frame for the house to bolt to. I have used both round and square and I think I prefer square ,still cap-able, but just a bit more work.

dougger222
The resort on lake of the woods where I keep my ski house advised heavily against using pipe or steel runners. They said on bare ice the shacks slide all over the place and are next to impossible to control. Oak is the way to go.
