An actual fishing report

Recommended Posts

I know many of you have to wait another few days but I tried my hand over in Wisconsin last weekend, albeit on less than stellar waters due to weather conditions.

I put in about 4 hours each day for muskies. Saturday and today didn't see a thing. Sunday had 2 follows, one in the mid 30's one was mid 40's. The theme seems to be fish hate the weeds right now. On most lakes they are just too new to be holding fish, and a lot of dead plant matter is on the bottom around those new weeds which isn't helping. And it wasn't just muskies that's been the case for, most every species seems to be concentrated elsewhere.

The 2 muskies I found were both on hard bottom features, where a shoreline running parallel to wind direction made a small jut out into the lake. Not really a classic point, just a tiny little bubble out into the wind. The trend was noticed with fish we were marking with the fish finder as well: tons of bait located near hard bottom where the wind was really howling. One fish chased a glidebait and the other chased a crankbait. Both in about 9 feet of water.

nice report Nick, I also headed over to Wisconsin for opener and it was the best day I've ever had on the water. We were up at 330 am and were fishing by 545. I ended up putting 6 fish in the boat all on a custom soft tail phantom. Not any size but a good way to shake off the rust for the MN opener. Got a 28,33,33.5,34.5,35.5 and a fat 42 in the 8. Water temps varied from 57-59. All shallow fish coming from 5 feet or less. heck of a day!

Maybe the mornings were the time to be out then. I was out in the afternoons. Had to cut the grass on Saturday while it was still dry, Sunday ended up fixing some trailer wiring, and Monday had to fix the pedal for the trolling motor (fished most of Sunday without being able to turn right with the trolling motor).

I'm usually not a big fan of the spray treatments but i don't think it'll have as big of an effect this year since the pondweed isn't up yet. I'm thinking a lot of it will be killed early instead of after it's full grown and won't mess up the water as bad, least I'm hoping.

There was some really nice cabbage in a lot of those areas and the fish were using it although we didn't see anything much bigger than 40" over the weekend.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
