Power window

Recommended Posts

2001 Chevy Silverado 2500. Drivers side power window ceased to work. Press the switch, nothing, can't hear the motor go, no click no nothing, both directions. I checked the manual and online and and can't find a fuse that is only for the drivers window. I have the panel off(had to replace the door handle)so I have access to everything. Can I safely put 12 volts into the feed wires? I suspect it is the switch but don't want to replace the switch to the tune of $70 only to find out is the motor. Or is there an obscure fuse that I am missing.

You can either disconnect the motor, and put a test light in between the 2 wires to the motor, and move the switch up and down, and see that it lights the light in both directions, or disconnect the switch, and jump a power, and a ground to the motor, one way will make it go down, the other way will make it go up.

Since you have the door panel off, try the tap test, take a hammer, or a block of wood, and tap the electrical motor, and see if the brushes are stuck, like you would with a starter motor.

I have the same truck and have had a window motor go out 3 times and it seems this is a common problem on these trucks. Each time the symptoms were the same as yours and I suspected the switch initially, but in every case it was the motor. You can get one from Amazon for something like $70 and it takes all of 30 minutes to replace it.

Tried a couple whacks with a rubber mallat to the motor no go, pull the connector and tested the switch, switch OK. Whacked the motor a couple more times and tried it again, it now goes up and down.

Thanks for the tip 4WE!!!!
