Walnut18
I have been spearing out of my Trap Voyageur and it has worked pretty well but the lake has to be crystal clear. I am looking into buying/building a small house to leave out on the lake for next winter. I have seen suitcase style canvas houses as permanents out there before. For anybody that has done this how does it work out? It seems like the thing would get really beat up with wind and snow stretching the canvas. I am open to any suggestions also on building a small house, I have scrolled throught most of the forums already to get some ideas. Thanks for any advice people have. merkman
Welcome to the darkhouse spearing forums Walnut18 Of course there is no "right" spearshack out there since everyone's tastes and needs are different but I will share some of the things I really like about the shack I have (Gordie built it). Here it is on 3 inches of ice at the begining of last season. First is the size: Specs: 4' wide X 5' long X 6.5' tall I really like this size. It fits nice into the back of a pickup and has plenty of room for one person. The only thing I can think of to improve it would be to make the roof "popup" so you would not have the wind resistance while transporting it. (something along these lines) The next is the weight... this shack is very light weight. Constrution: 2 X 2 Cedar, tin sheeting, foam insulation. What ever you do you want to make it light or at least easy to move. The tin blocks my cell phone service but I have learned ways around that too. The built in skis are a very nice feature and I use them alot. Hole Size: 44" Wide X 24" Deep That is the smallest I would go as far as holesize goes. I speared out of spearheads shack lat winter with aproz 6' X 30 inch hole and that thing was real nice but the 44" Wide X 24" Deep works good too but after spearing out of the larger hole the 44 X 24 looks small now.... I have added a full width bench, forced air heat, and other amenities too. That is the great thing about all of this. just customize it to your own needs. - Merk
