02 fuel pump

Recommended Posts

My 02 seira 1500 cuts out going down the road but only after 15 miles. Today I drove it 50 miles and down to 1/4 of a tank of gas. When I got to town it had a hard time. It would stall in parking lots at red lights I didn't have any problems after I filled up. Now I wont have any problems until 50 to 70 miles into the tank. I have replaced the fuel pump once about year and a half ago. Unfortunately they put in a carter I have herd they are junk. Does this sound like a pump problem or do they just quit.

thanks for any help

Dan

If its as predictable as your sayin, wouldn't be hard to put a fuel pressure guage on it. Tape the gauge to the window. Drive and monitor fuel pressure. If fuel pressure drops than its probable the pump. If fuel pressure holds steady you'll have to look in a different direction.

That would tell me if the pump was working or not but I don't have access to a Gauge with that long of hose. I did try loosening the gas cap. it made it two block and quit I had to floor it to get it started. Lot of black smoke came out of the exhaust. Know it idles at over 1000 rpms

My F150 was doing something similar. It turned out to be the hose on the backside of the intake manifold was loose causing me to lose fuel pressure. Might be a cheap fix if you can figure out were your losing pressure

Yesterday I put a new gas cap on. since this has be happening the engine temp has been acting up. In the morning it will come up to temp if I make any stops the temp will only come up about halfway and bounce around. Then it will flood out I have to hold the throttle to the floor to start it. Does the temp control the fuel delivery? I have been waiting to change the thermostat until the fuel problem is fixed.

Not sure why you replaced the gas cap, hopefully it is not aftermarket. Gas caps do not cause crank no starts.

Since the temp gauge is bouncing around maybe there is a problem with the coolant temp sensor. It is pretty easy to monitor the temp sensor with a scan tool to see what it is reading when the problem occurs. Open coolant temp sensors will default a value of -40 degrees F. Unless its a Volkswagen then they default to 240 degrees F. At -40 the computer is dumping fuel to into the engine.
