gas furnace question

CigarGuy

Question

Up at the cabin and having some trouble with the furnace. The motor/fan will run, but burners won't fire up. I tapped it and the burner kicked in and shut off a few seconds later. I noticed the flame sensor is broken off at the end (don't know if I did it when I gave it a love tap). Would this cause the above problems? I flipped the switch off on the circuit box---DO I need to turn of the gas supply to the furnace off for the night? I have a wood burner to keep warm through the night, so it shouldn't be too bad, just really want to know about shutting off the lp. Thanks...

If the flame sensor is broken the furnace will not operate, you will have to replace the sensor. There is no harm in leaving the gas and power source on but if it makes you feel safer then turn them both off. Good luck.

Thanks for getting back to me-I should have put this in the "home improvement" or whatever it's called section. I don't want to crawl back under the crawl space, so I'll let it be. If I just replace the sensor will the igniter lite the burners and stay on-work properly?? Thanks again.

Correction: After a little research, it's the igniter that is cracked off on the end-not the sensor. Hopefully replacing and cleaning the sensor(if needed) will fix it. Gotta love u-tube.

Sounds like you found out the problem but I'll add this for the heck of it.

If inducer fan is proven then the next sequence is the igniter. If the igniter doesn't glow then its bad or the inducer wasn't proven. Blocked air intake, bad pressure switch, leak in the hose from inducer fan to pressure switch, clog/restriction at the fitting on inducer fan for the hose.

Take down your model and serial numbers of the furnace and get a replacement igniter.
