Trolling rod ?

I've had luck with the reels but haven't used the rods yet. I did ask another experienced downrigger dude if I can rely on the 8 1/2 rods for downrigging and got the thumbs up. I bought 4. Couldn't pass up the combo for the $50 sale price.

i picked up a 7 1/2 today for bottom bouncer/cranks, my first ever line counter combo, learned hard way last fall this setup almost a necessity. for a beginner like me, i was told they are good & cannot beat the price. but if u r much more experienced or put them through the ringer alot more, maybe wanna look a little more

i did get a great deal combo with braid, couple of ice lures, + tax n all walked out the door for less than the combo itself reg price

I use a few rods for trolling. The one I use 80% of the time is a 7 foot med/light spinning system. With 10 lb Sufix meterd braid. I find it is the best when 1 or 2 are fishing in the boat flat lining lures up to #7 shad raps. When working <16fow it is tops. If your line fouls you have good reel in speed and you can cast to get your line back out. When your line fouls right as you hit the fish zone, casting to get your line back out quick can be your best frend!

Braided line will not work well with plainer boards. The clips don't hold well so you have to wrap the line around the clips.

The longer your line is out of the fish zone, the less fish you will catch.

We have 2 of the Cabela's trolling rods and they work great. We have Daiwa line counter reels on them. We troll for many different fish. We have caught some 20 plus pound pike and my wife even landed a 54" musky last summer. I thought the rod would break for sure but it held up great.

Look at the new Jason Mitchell rods. They are $60-$70 bepending on length and have a lifetime warranty. I use two of their 5' shorties and am very happy with them. Looking to get some of the longer ones this summer to replace what I have.

are there 2-piece trolling rods out there? I can't say I've seen them, but I've never looked too hard.

Yes there are 2-piece rods for trolling.

I have two 10'6" downrigger rods that are 2 piece. I also have a Mr Walleye rod (bottom bouncer/plainer board) that is 8'6", it is telescopic. If you can't put one telescopic joint in the rod to get it to fit in a boat rod locker, it will be two piece.

The main use of the 10'6" rods for me now (I removed the down riggers)is for trolling spoons early in the season or when I have 2 newbies in the boat (3 lines trolling). I give one of them a longer rod. It is easier then training them in on plainer boards to keep from tangling lines.

For spoon fishing pike. I like the long rod when trolling shallows in spring. I can hold the rod tip up to get the spoon up over submerged cover (weeds) and then lower and drop the tip back to get the lure to flutter down on the back side of the weeds. It also gets the lure away from the boat in the shallows. My first memories of fishing was doing this with cane poles so that may give you an idea of how much line to have out. Just remember to keep your rod tip up! grin
