Interesting that you had clear water. It's been fairly stained in SE MN for the last two weeks. Although the cool down is surely limiting the amount of melting now, so they'll clear up this week.

Why fish the mandatory C&R season if it goes against your morals of releasing a wounded fish?

hooks are sharp and there is the possibility of morality every cast. There should be an option to keep trout. C/R only season is encouraging WANTON WASTE of our resource.

There is an option... It starts May 4th...

Do you pinch your barbs? It helps making hooking and unhooking of trout a lot easier... Especially with those treble hooks... You could also change out the treble hooks on your PMs and go to a single hook... all kinds of options there for ya

There is always an option to keep trout... one state to the west and I guess one south depending on your latitude. Land of hawkeyes, corn, and the Grinnelephants. Also home to a portion of the driftless that I find quite enjoyable.

I do not believe that you will convince a lot of people that a mandatory CnR season is encouraging wanton waste.

Though, you can always wait until non early season, if you feel you are doing harm to the resources.

One could argue that C&R early season also encourages people to get out and enjoy the great resource that we have at our disposal.

I won't argue that early season C&R does end up killing some fish though. Fisherman kill fish, whether they mean to or not. That is always taken into account when fisheries experts manage streams and plan stocking events or rule changes. From what I've been told, however, the amount of fish that die during the C&R season is fairly low and that is why it's allowed to continue.

If you feel so strongly that C&R only promotes wonton waste though, why do you participate in it? Aren't you just as guilty as your fellow fisherman, the fisheries managers, and lawmakers if you do? Just food for though.

I don't want to deviate this thread into something other than what you intended it to be (although, I have a sneaking suspicion that you expected it to turn into a debate).

Well. Getting out and enjoying the outdoors would be counter to what Scooter has in store for WI, so that obvs is not what early season in WI is about.

And I am with you. This smells like we're being baited.

Unfortunately not by a master at it.

LHarris, I must first come out and say that I have seen you post on this site many times, along with some other trout specific forums with great information and it is obvious that you are a man of well-rounded knowledge when it comes to the sport of trout fishing. I must say though, that your antagonistic “reports” on HSO and other sites are somewhat disheartening. I would have to agree that this baited approach is a little uncalled for. If you have a problem with the regulations this time of year, why don’t you stay home? If it bothers you that much to have to release floaters, maybe think about modifying your approach to fit the “safety standards” if you will, of these fish (i.e. single hooks, pinched barbs, clipped hooks, the list goes on). Anyone can sit behind the keys and bash all day, which is not my approach here. Instead I would like to have faith in the DNR’s biologists and ask that you instead enlighten us with helpful quality reports, tips and tactics that I have seen from you before.

I will attempt to get on the Conservation Congress this spring.

I have heard that there are Trout Committee seats open.

My intentions are to get on the committee also and change the regulations.

LHarris, what you are trying to achieve by that little self-promotion rant? You can show off your accolades and drop names if you find it appropriate to uphold some sort of power. In my mind you are just the same as everyone else out there who has a passion for fishing, I hold nobody to a higher standard when it comes to passionate things. So why don’t you take a long leap off that particular wobbly soapbox.

The discussion stands that you had a very baited approach to this report and I think the over ridding majority of the trout fisherman I know and talk to find an appreciation for the early season. So why again, why try to start banter for no apparent reason. I see no reason we all can’t cherish a sport we love and have a general place to talk about the things we enjoy doing (HSO). Instead your snide remarks only drive a wedge between individuals who agree on a broad common ground, trout fishing. I see no room for it.

Thanks for the resume. The "I've friended people on facebook and fished with them" really adds to your credibility.

Besides knocking down trees taking photos and burying full plates of mini scallops, you are no expert. I don't see an A.A., B.S., M.S. or PhD in biology, let alone in anything, behind your name. I'll side with those who actually know the science behind it.

As I'm sure you will. When you do, dont be afriad to notch your belt with your new found position and broadcast it out to everyone. But that almost goes with out saying ey LHarris?

Big Hit- Its good to I really don't stand alone.

If I am successful in my attempt I will try to open early season to all anglers.

There will be zero rules stopping people from practicing c/r. The rules are in a state of flux currently and I want the average angler's perspective being heard prior to the big changes coming down the road.

With the resume you posted earlier I can't believe that you are not fishing lobbyist at in DC at this point. Again, how many facebook friends have you fished with?

Have you even been personally contacted any of your local senators or reps?

Its your niche. But their right, you shouldn't even fish the c/r season if your concerned about fatalities. Or tweak your tactics. I'm sure one or two of them fifty thousand panthers ya bought could be single hook barbless rig, eh?

Single hook panther go through the water wrong. The treble is almost a rudder keeping it in line.

Awesome!!??

Mepps maybe? Maybe another lure in general? Maybe give er a good rip before you start your retrieve? Dude, a true sportman or one who claimed to have this much love for the sport would make the adjustment, you know what I'm saying?

How bout we get back to the fishing, and discussing the actual fishing, eh gentlemen? Personally , I doubt that the regulation will get changed, as I think that the majority of trout anglers favor the early c/r season, as do I.

I am no expert in trout management, regardless of my Biology/Fish and Wildlife Degrees. But I can't see how a catch and release mandate could be bad for a fish population. A lot more fish will go home with fisherman than will die as a result of foul hooking if the reg allows harvest.

Lunker...

There are some seriously big changes coming down the pipe if my WDNR sources are correct.

Season being extended early and late.

The big wigs at the WDNR have been TOLD to simplify and make regulation ALL angler friendly.

I don't see it happening until 2015 but they are coming.
