Gordie's fish might have even weighed a bit more, especially when compared to known fish. For example the South Dakota Record:

The fish, was 63.5 pounds, was 47 inches long and had a girth of 30 inches. Holland’s fish eclipsed Roger Adams three year old record fish by three pounds.

oh yes, most definitely it varies

Especially when you are talking over 50lbs.

The Mississippi state record is 77 lbs. Fish & Wildlife Warden Darren Coggin measured the fish, it was 49 1/2” long and had a 35” girth.

50" is about the max length for Flats, after that they just start adding pounds. A thick fish from head to tail is hard to account for by using geometric equations.

Pounders put the fish in a large insulated chest filled with river water and weighed it at Tri-Star Marine and the on the 4-County office scales. He then took the fish to his brother Jerry Jr.’s house on the cut-off island across from Ruben’s and put him in a large live-well made of stone. Water was pumped from the river through a hose to the tank and later released

Thanks for posting this, Darren. My big fish this summer measured 46 inches long with a girth of 31 inches. When I hung him on my spring scale it hung to the 60 lb mark. I was kind of doubting if my spring scale was accurate but after seeing the South Dakota record fish my 60 lb fish is probably pretty accurate.
