Oil filter backing off.

Recommended Posts

I have a 97 F150 4.6L. The last two times I changed the oil the filter backed backed off enough to leak a significant amount of oil in hurry. Right at first start up. The first time not that much came out because I noticed it right away. This time all but a quart leaked out basically right away. The filter is mounted up near the bumper. (Not sure if they all are) I specifically remember tightening the filter down. And when I thought back to remember if anything seemed odd while putting the filter on, I remember it seemed to thread on and spin just fine but bound up towards the end of the threads then spun more freely before finally seating. I ended up getting it tight enough to not leak. Has anybody else encountered this before. Any insight would be appreciated.

Be sure to check that there isn't an old gasket from a previous filter that may have pulled away from an old oil filter and remained adhered to the seating area in the application area. 3/4 turn to snug up the filter should be sufficent. Be sure to put a small amount of oil on the rubber gasket prior to install to reduce any excessive friction at install.

Goodluck.

I'd agree that the threaded part of the adapter is backing out from the housing and not the filter itself backing off. This was really common on the older chev trucks after the quick lubes over tightened the filter enough times it would strip the housing. A new housing and they where good to go.

Thanks a lot guys. I am keeping a close eye on it and it is not leaking anymore. I'm hoping to wait until the next oil change is needed before dumping all of the oil to look at the threads/adapter situation. Or can I somehow take the filter off without all of the oil pouring out?

I had this happen twice, both times I never checked to see if the o-ring on the filter came off with the filter. sounds like you have a double o-ring between the filter and the housing.
