How To Get Started Building Rods?

Recommended Posts

After purchasing some ice custom rods this year I have become very intrigued with the world of custom rod building. I would love to start this as a hobby making a few rods a year. I have my first kid on the way and see it as a way to "get away" and do something enjoyable while staying aoround the homefront, however, I have no idea where to start. Ideally. I would like to focus on building ice rods and possibly open water using high quality components (once I figure out ow to build one). Do any of the experts here have advice on where I could get some advice or build a rod with an experienced builder? I have heard that Thorne Bros used to allow you to buy the components and build a rod with them but I'm not sure if that's the case anymore. Any advice you have would be much appreciated.

1. take a rod-building class, many areas offer classes where you buy the components and a fee and they take you through the process in a class room environment.

2. there are many articles and videos on rod-building on the web, do some web searches.

3. buy a book and start reading, there are step by step processes.

4. find a rodbuilder that is willing to spend sometime with you to get you started.

For 2, or 3 you can always get started and come back here to ask questions, lot of fine people here willing to help out.

I would not star with ice rods, they are harder to work with for the most part. Same with ultra lights.

Where are you located? I assume St Paul area based on your user name....

Gary Wick in Anoka holds classes and has everything you need for components to build rods.

I dont have his contact info any more, but super nice guy and does a good job at his classes that I took.
