Lithium Ion battery care for auger use

hydro

Question

With the new Li-ion battery powered ION ice auger and using cordless drills for punching holes in the ice, what are people seeing for issues with the batteries?

I am using the cordless drill and adaptor and while it is working very well, I understand the Li-ion batteries do not like low temperatures, losing reserve capacity as it gets colder. It also appears that they should not be charged when below 32 degrees F which implies that they would need to be warmed up after use and before charging.

Has anyone seen issues so far this year?

All common batteries (lead-acid, NiMh, NiCad, Li-ion, etc.) all lose power in cold weather. As I understand it, at least with regard to NiMh, NiCad, and Li-ion, Li-ion is the best in cold weather.

I don't know if there are any concerns about low temperature charging, but I do know they should not be left at a low state of discharge and for storage it's recommended to store at about 40% of charge.

I use the 24 volt Icegator and keep in warm area. Cold especially below 0 is very hard on Lithium batteries. Fully charged and warm I can do 60 holes through 24" ice on one charge and fast.....the auger runs at 375 RPM.
