Triton XT10 trailer shorting issue!

leech~~

Question

I just bought a 2011 Triton XT10 snowmobile trailer last year and ended up with a short wire issue. I thought I would share this so others with this trailer or other Triton's with the same design that end up with ground shorts can check this first and save the time it took me to run it down. The wire harness on the rear left hand side is run through a Alm, channel that is welded to the back of the rear frame and the wires run thought it. It does not add any support to the frame, it's just there for the wires to run in. The issue is that when loading and unloading sleds or wheelers the frame flexes and the channel can break loose from the frame right at the weld. When this happens the channel drops down and the trailer wires inside get pinched and if not cut right off will ground out on the frame. shocked

To fix it I took a sawsall and cut a good gap in the channel watching not to cut into the wires and cause anymore damage then this design flaw already did. I pulled enough wire out from each side and fixed the cut wire. I then put on a long peice of the black plastic wire covering and slid it up each end into the frame and remaining channel to help protect it in the future. I can see others having this same issue with that channel breaking at the same spot. frown I am going to let Triton know about this, as wiring is not covered under their Warranty! mad

I've found the same problem on several other brands of trailer that uses this same setup including my own Floe. Rather than re weld it, I made a small aluminum bracket and riveted it back to the frame with stainless steel rivets so it has a bit less tension on it and not as rigid. Its already outlasted the original weld.

I understand them not warrantying wiring, but when welds break and damage wiring that should be covered. Did you contact Triton?
Not yet, I just found and fixed it today. Good thing I eluded all the hwy and city cops on my 325 mile trip back from LOW last weekend with no lights!!!!!!!!! I did stay one extra night at the Motel just so I could at least drive home in the daylight! mad
