Lowrance Elite series?

Ha, was just thinking about the same thing myself today and was looking on line at prices. I use a flasher as well but you would always have a back up sitting right on the sled if the flasher went down! wink

I got a good deal on a Elite-4. Went with it because I already had the chip for lowrance.full-34858-28146-elite4005.jpg

Really like it because the menu is pretty much the same as the HDS on my boat and I can put the Elite on standby to save power. It also fits in a 5 gal. bucket.Mounted it on the back of my FL22HD Ultra Pack

Thanks Leech,I got the Elite-4 at Big C in the bargin room $199.00 and cut the high speed transducer off the power cable. Already had the chip.Mounted it on the back of my FL22 and ran it off the flaher battery. Nice part is I can put the Elite on standby to save the battery when I'm using the flasher.

Not a very good spot. All we get is big walleyes there.

So if a person were to buy one it would be better/cheaper to buy the one with preloaded lake maps rather than haveing to buy another chip? Or is it going to give better detail by adding a chip? The only micro card I have now has the MN snowmobile trails on it which should be compatable with these units I think.

Were there any others in the cave when you were there? May have to look into one! wink

Preload maps are pretty basic. If you want more detail aftermarket chips are much better. The reason I went with this unit was because I already had a chip that would work and it was cheap,$199.00, also the size was right. It fit on my Ultra Pack perfect. You can get the Mark-4 even cheaper(black and white)or a chart only even cheaper. If I was starting new I would look at the bird 597 or 385.You cant buy the Lakemaster for Lowrance anymore. I dont like handhelds, the screen is to small.

Elite-4 4" screen,597 5",385 3.5". Some of the Garmin street units also have a lake format built in and take the Upper midwest chip. I dont like the touch screen its hard to work with gloves and mittens. Also would worry about spilling Gulp Alive juice on it.

Ah. Have you ever tried to cut one down? I have cut a few down and spliced them into a short ducer for ice fishing. You just need to leave about 5 feet and make the splice up by the unit so it doesn't get wet. wink

Oh yes the good old days of Jimming things up to work. It was always fun to see something work even if half-ars as least! Well, I guess you are still doing it with your new mod! Wish I can find one to do the same thing! wink

I have 3 HDS but dont like taking them out on the ice. They are battery hogs, and yes I turn down the back light and turned off the logo light.

Got the Elite-4 because it is small enough to mount on the back of my flasher and I can turn it off anytime I'm not using it or put it on stanby. For $200.00 cant go wrong.Way better than a hand held for my old eyes. And I can load the waypoints from my HDS to the Elite.

I only use mine as GPS so only on when needed, rest of the time in the truck or shack, I dont have the want or need to have it mounted on my flasher since I use 2 different ones and it won't fit with my softpacks...Plus I dont want the HDS sucking down my flasher battery so it gets it's own 12ah battery...

Thats was the idea being able to turn it off when not using. Not being able to turn off the GPS was the biggest drawback to the HDS. I used my 5 last year. It was ok but I love my FL22. Been using a Vex since they first started making them.I also have a Humminbird 55 and a FL18.I walk out so wieght is a big factor. One battery that runs the locator, gps and the shack lights all day, works for me.

My name is Dan and I'm a ice fishing junkie

I used Vex's to for many years due to the only game out there other than the HB Super Sixty ( still have that and a green box Lowrance) but today I run Marcums after being seen the light by a friend several years ago...So my units all have softpacks and no way to mount a seperate GPS to and figured since I got thousands wrapped upin my HDS units may as well use them and save the money I would have had to spend to replace my H20 aqnd upgrade other things like shacks and rods....Mounted mine on a Vex pack ($30) and got a spare 12ah battery ( $25) and have a great ice GPS that I can easily see while driving or glance back and see it on the sled...I cant justify buying a seperate GPS when I have 2 perfectly good ones sitting in the fishing room all winter doing nothing and no use for a unit like the Elite on the boat so it would sit next to the flashers all summer doing nothing.... Well would sit with the 5 as the 7 may go on the boat...
