Taurus Trouble-again

Help!

Just got back with my chirping '06 Taurus from the dealer. The chirp, it appears, is not from the belt or pulleys, but rather from a bearing on top of the engine. Something to do with the timing and a rod going into the cam. Does this sound right? Then there is the $120.00 Dx charge and then the repair. What would sound right for something like that? I was quoted a rather high number. I hate to get the proverbial "shaft"(and that's not camshaft) right before Christmas, if possible. Noise started Tues. morning after the car had been driven about 4 miles and has gotten louder and more consistent. Quite embarrassing, esp when stopped in a long line of slow traffic. Then I was also told that the fuel filter needed replacement, which I agreed to and them was told the fuel line was bad and needs to be replaced soon and that it would be very expensive. Is it?

This is the same old 3 liter V6 I had in my '86 Sable and that engine got better mileage with no problems up to the day it was traded with 130,000 on it. They sure have improved, haven't they? Anyway, any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

That would be the CMP shaft. It is the shaft that replaced the distributor when they went to DIS ignition. The shaft is driven by the cam, drives the oil pump, and has the cam sensor mounted to the top.

Eventually it will get bad enough that the car will start to stall. When this happens it is imperative that it is replaced immediately.

That shaft is available in the aftermarket. I know NAPA carries them complete with the shaft, sensor, and alignment tool.

The upper plenum needs to be removed (theoretically wink ) and the harness needs to be pulled back on the drivers side of the engine. The sensor can then be removed. The shaft aligned, and then finally removed.

It will take a novice easily an afternoon to replace. The alignment of the new one is the most critical step.

I have not personally had to replace fuel lines in this age group of Tarus, but depending what is bad, it may be expensive. Does one has to replace a short portion, or the whole thing? We don't know, so its hard to tell.

X3 on the Cmp assembly.

Thanks to Jeremy and the others who responded to my inquiry about my da-- car. Guess it'll be known as the Ford who stole Christmas this year. Can't wait to give the car to my wife, since she's the one who liked it when we bought it. I didn't, but had limited options at the time, just like now.

Thanks again and have a great Holiday Season. I'm wishing for good, safe ice for Christmas.

Just a little update on the Toras_,as my brother calls it. Got it back on Tues. $562 lighter in the wallet. No chirp anymore and the fuel line was not bad, only some clip assoc. with it, fortunately. Thanks again to those who answered my plea for advice. Merry Christmas to all!
