Jeep 4.7L losing lots of oil

Recommended Posts

2005 Jeep 4.7L is losing about 3qts of oil in 4,000 miles. I'm preparing to have the shop start digging into it within the next week, and want to be prepared for my options.

There are no visible leaks and the garage floor is void of any spots. I'm confident that leaks are out of the question. I imagine the first step would be a compression test. If, in fact, the shop can determine which cylinder is failing, can they determine if it's a ring or a valve. If it's a ring, can they access the piston without pulling the engine? What is the common practice for diagnosing this problem?

No problem, well within Mopar specs(over 50k allows 1 quart per 750 miles). Check your oil regularly or trade it off before the rest starts to fall apart.

Search "chrysler oil consumption". You are not alone.

The 3.8 liters in the caravans are far worse. We usually drain about a half a quart out of them when they come in for service. They hold 5 quarts with a new filter.

Head over to walmart. Pick up a couple of jugs of Mobil High mileage and a couple quarts for topping off, should be about $15 for five quart jug. Use it for at least two oil changes making sure to top off when needed. We have had pretty good results across the board when using this at the shop.
