Ol' Lund
Hi-I am in the market for an auger for my wheelhouse, as i dont want to use my gas auger in there. I have it narrowed down to Strikemaster Electra or Jiffy Pro4 Propane. Out of these two, what would you choose? I will be attending the ice show in St. Paul this next weekend for the first time, what kind of deals can i expect to find? Thanks!
Fishin4fun_MN
I would go with the Pro 4.
dougger222
Owning gas and electric augers I'd say go for the propane one. With an electric auger it will be tough to cut holes for tip ups and cut a lot of holes in one area.Although an electric auger works great for opening up old holes due to it's slow speed the chipper style on the jiffy should work just as good if not better.Ask all the vendors at the show what their best price is and go from there. 12 years ago I did just that and wound up with a lazer 7in gas and lazer 8in electric for $225 each and $100 in free tackle. Bulldoggr
You should look at the new ION, side by side videos show the Ion drills more holes and faster on one charge.
Random guy
I'm a big fan of the Strikemaster Big Volt. You do need a battery for the 24' cables but a ton power, chipper blades on a coned shape base for reopening old holes and made just for the hardshack angler. northerndave
I got the big volt for those same reasons. The RPM on the LP Jiffy was too much for me, wanting to keep the drilling mess minimal in the sleeper house.
Tipupdown
Pro 4 hands down!
Iambjm
Because I am a crotchety old lady who has a bad back I want the big volt or the Ion, the Jiffy is just too heavy for me.
Hawg
That Big Volt, with no motor, has to be he largest profit item in the history of augers. It makes more sense in a permanant house than the others just because of the chipper blade for reopening holes.
Cliff Wagenbach
Because I am a crotchety old lady who has a bad back I want the big volt or the Ion, the Jiffy is just too heavy for me. The 8" ION weights only 21 pounds and cuts great! 30+ holes on one battery charge through 25 inches of ice and still cutting!I helped test this drill last spring and bought one this fall as soon as I could get my hands on one!Easiest drilling auger that I have ever used by far!Cliff
Boker001
I just picked up the new Honda powered Strikemaster. 4 stroke should be light on fumes and the honda will never die. And only 23lbs. No more mixing gas. If you go with any auger I'd suggest hitting Gander M by midnight cause they have spend $500 get $100 off. My auger would have been $605 after tax but I got it for $505. Can't beat the discount.
Ol' Lund
I have heard some good things about the IONS, but one conern is how long the lithium ion battery will last in the cold, i have used lithium ion batteries in power tools and i know they do not do well with the cold weather, and dont last near as long as they do in the summer months
Fishin4fun_MN
Lithium does well in cold weather compared to Ni-Cd or Ni-MH batteries do.

The battery generate a little of it's own heat during use so does not run down fast.Cliff
thatoneguy
I've had my Strikemaster Electra for years, and I love it. Won't ever go back to a gas auger.
