MN Mike
We took the planter out and stuck some onion seed in the ground on Thanksgiving Day, just a couple hours after these pics were taken, the ground turned white and I think it's here to stay. Pictures are pretty poor, they came off of a cell phone. I planted Onion seed last year on the first week in December, the ground was pretty much frozen but since it was so dry, it was like powder. I ended up harvesting about 120 lbs of Onions this year from that planting. Something different...... Mike

Tom7227
I think you're cheating putting this on the home and garden page! You have some nice equipment and some good looking ground there. Hope you have success with your planting.

leech~~
Yep I don't know! Are Onions always plant in the fall?
MN Mike
They don't have to be planted in the fall but they can be if a person wants to. Germination from seed takes some time, 2 weeks or more so getting them in the ground now will help them get the jump in the spring since Onions germinate at a very low temp and are frost hardy. Seed Onions typically make better storage Onions too if a person is looking for that.Mike
jameswilson
I had the same question; Are Onions always plant in the fall? Or I may reframe it, which is the best season to plant Onions? You mentioned you harvested about 120 lbs of onions. How big is your farm? MN Mike
You can plant seed Onions in the Spring or Fall. Onion seed planted in the Fall will lay dormant until spring, then germinate when the soil starts to warm in the spring and get a jump on the season. Onion seed is a slow germinator, if you can get in really early ( April in our neck of the woods ), it's one of the first things that go into the dirt, if you miss the April window, then you almost have to go to Onion Sets.I harvested those onions this fall from about 6 rows, I had some weed pressure where they were planted so it could have been better plus I was trying to use up some very old seed that didn't germinate anymore so my stand wasn't the greatest, all of the new seed I used germinated very well. The garden is about 2 - 3 acres, mostly sweet corn but also a lot of other items too.Mike
