my 2000 polaris 500 speedometer took a dump and apparently the 4wheel drive is tied to it because when it went i lost 4 wheel drive when i talked to a shop they stated i can re route the ground to get the 4 wheel back but i still wont have the speedo "which i dont care about" but i would like the 4 wheel back . has anyone else heard of doing that ?

Yeah that will work. Basically, your front hubs need 12v to engage the AWD. I'm not sure where or how it works but the hubs just aren't getting a ground while in 2wd. When the speedo goes bad the open circuit can't get closed. Another common problem is just the hall effect sensor could be bad but I'm not sure if a 2000 model had them, I know 2002 did because I replaced it on one of my old Sportsmans. If it is a hall effect sensor make sure you replace your front brake pads because too worn of pads is what causes them to go bad.

Found this on how to get the hubs a ground...

"open up the AWD switch, unhook the wire harness plug from the swich, take a small piece of wire and jump the brown and brown/white wires together. Plug it back in and you should Have AWD again."

Joe P, you might want to check the kill switch on the left handle bar. My 2004 Spotrsman 400 had the same problem. If the switch is moved one way it only kills the battery power and not the motor. Don't know if yours is wired the same but it would be a cheap fix if it was.

My son recently had the same symptoms your describing with his 2001 Sportsman 500.

It turned out to be a corroded connection in the speedo/awd wiring. I do not know where the wires connect but his friend had it taken care of in about 10 minutes and claimed it is a common problem on these units.

I had a thread about this a while back. I have a 700 Sportsman. My speedo would come on and off and then finally stayed off full time. Yes it does also control the 4 wheel drive. There are 3 self resetting circuit breakers under the front cowling. One of them could be bad. I checked all of mine and they were fine. I called my Polaris dealer and he said I must have a broken wire somewhere. I couldn't find it. I brought it to him and he had it fixed in no time. It was a broken wire. Got off lucky. Works like a charm now.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
