Catch Cover Sleeve ?

After fishing out of my wheel house for three seasons without sleeves, I bit the bullet and purchased some from the place in Milaca. I did notice my line catching on the ice shavings that I packed around the holes and wanted to avoid that. I am looking forward to using them this season. Just have to cut them to the right length once the house is set for the first time.

DUMB question --

I take it you cut them just to fit to the ice level? not down the hole? That is where I was confused. Then you want it level to the floor of the house? That way if you don;t have any snow to bank up the house it will help to keep it warmer and keep the holes from freezing?

Am I understanding this correctly?

Why can't a guy just buy 5 gallon pails and cut them to length? Is the diameter not correct?

I just bought a house with catch covers and was hoping I could get by with purchasing a few 5 gallon homer pails from Home Depot and stuffing them down there. Thoughts?

They work great. But do not waste your money on them. Get some 5 gallon pails and cut them to size. Much cheaper and work the same if not better. I like to leave the top of the pail above the hole so nothing can slide in the water from the floor of the house. Really simple thing to do, and doesn't cost $20 per hole.

The store bought Hole covers are bigger than a 5 gal pail but I modify them and use the pails anyway. I can't see $20 for a plastic sleeve. There have been a lot of posts on ways to do this over the years if you search. I've tried cheap waste baskets but the plastic gets too brittle when cold. I always come back to the pails.

An insert is the way to go, I bought a couple to fit the catch covers that I have in the wheeler. Then I looked around for 5 gal buckets, for my 4 other holes.

The big store "H D" bucket fit nicely. They had a double lip on top that I left on and it has saved things from going down the hole, including my pole!

What would someone use for square holes? I have a skid house I bought this spring, and it has irregular sized holes. I think a 5 gal bucket will fit but with the hole being square it still leaves a big gap. Any suggestions?
