Dodge Ram parking shift sensor

Recommended Posts

'06 Dodge Ram 2500

When we try to put it in park, typically it will only slide over to reverse, unless we put it in park, then put the shifter into reverse and let it roll back an inch or so, then put it in park.

If someone's driving the truck and shuts it off without doing the above procedure, when the next person gets in the truck, the indicator will say "R" and the truck will not start until put the truck in neutral.

I've think I've got it narrowed down to a transmission relay switch or something along those lines from trying to read other forums.

My 2 main questions are, can someone confirm whether or not there has been a service bulletin on this issue, and also whether or not where the sensor is that needs to be replaced?

Thanks.

Sounds more like the linkage or the transmission range switch.

It would be easy enough to disconnect the shift cable from the trans. Have a helper turn the key on and hold the brake while you manually shift the trans thought the gears. The engine would not have to be running,

If the same problem exists than I would suspect the range switch. It should be mounted just below and back from where the shift linkage attaches to the transmission.

Are you looking for TSB or recall info?

Ive got an 05 diesel 2500 and mine had issues with going into park as well, you have to put it in R and go back a little then slide it back into P. I had dealer look at it and all they did was put an alarm on it so if I have the door open while not in Park it starts honking and lights blinking. There was some Dodge recall on the shifting thing but all they did was to put alarm on it I believe.

On my 01 ram, I adjusted the linkage because it wouldn't start in P sometimes, I had to move it to N. Now problem solved.

I know about the alarm, I've already disabled that. I have a tendency to back up to the trailers with one leg hanging out the door sometimes, and hate the "HONK HONK HONK".

Mind sharing how to disable the alarm?

I took it back to dealer and told them that i didn't want that %*(%%* alarm, but they told me they couldn't remove it.

Now it goes off (like you said when i'm hookin' up) and I dont have time to look into it and then I forget about it.

Mule -

Personally, I used to know the guys at the service department at the dealership. One time it was in for some warranty, I had them "unflash" the flash update on one of my trucks. The other truck still does it.

The worst part is the truck that still does it, is the one that won't go into park all the time. You put the shifter in to park, open the door while the truck is running, the truck still thinks it's in reverse and the horn starts blaring.

Neighbors love it when it's 2 am and I'm trying to hook trucks up to plows during a snowfall and I'm getting in and out alot while trying to let the truck warm up. smile

If you google it, there are a couple of solutions, including hooking the center seat belt into the driver's side so the truck thinks you're belted in, or unplugging the wires under the seat and making a jumper. Although both of the above solutions seem to come with mixed results.
