Wish-I-Were-Fishn
I want to network 2 PC's at my office. The old one is sharing an internet connection using a switch that then goes back to a router.I'm adding a new computer that I want connected to my old one. It does not need internet, but it's ok if it has it.Can I just use another switch to connect my 2 PC's and then map the drives to network them? No need for a router then, correct? upnorth
You can just connect the new PC to the same switch as the other PC. They have multiple port just for that reason. If I understand your network setup correctly and your router has multiple ports you can plug into there also. And yes it will be able to get to the internet. Wish-I-Were-Fishn
The first switch is way across the building. I connected to it only to use my landlords Internet connect as part of my lease. This new pc will be about 3 feet away from my old one. upnorth
Are you talking a pretty long run back to the switch? If so a 2nd switch could be put in place to literally split the connection to allow the 2nd PC to connect to the same network.
Whoaru99
That'll work.More or less how I have it set up at my house. A router in the back room feeds a couple computers there and provides a line to the media player in my bedroom. Then another line from the router goes to the living room where I have a switch to split the connection to feed this computer, an AV pre/pro, and a DVD player/media player. masoct3
Yes, whatever your current computer is connecting to via network cable you can simply add another switch (switch, not hub, not router). Your computer will be recognized by DHCP to incorporate an IP address at that point.
