After seeing a few reports of people finding hens, I had to head out in the heat after work yesterday to see for myself. I checked out a brand new woods where there are a ton of oak. I expected to find a ton of chickens, and a few hens if I was lucky. Turned out to be a worthwhile trip as I found 6 hens around 2 trees! I was only in the woods for a little over an hour and had to head back, I had as much as I could strap to my backpack!

Hens are definitely one of my all time favorites, not only because they taste so good, but because they keep so well in the freezer. In the next few weeks I hope to stockpile enough to get me to morel season next spring, and have enough to give some away.

The time is here, get out and find some, and post pictures here for everyone to see!

P.S. Sorry for the beer can. It's what was handy for a size reference.

should be apologizing for the brand of beer sicksmile

It was hot last night in the woods. I needed a drink of water when I got back!

You are right, though, it's still early. I've only been looking for them for a couple years, but this is two weeks earlier than I ever found them before.

Matt, after seeing all of your pictures throughout the summer, you have no need to be jealous!! I did see that picture you are talking about. I can't tell how far he is holding it out in front of himself, but there is no question it is a giant! I've got to see if I can find one like that this year.

OK I'll Give...

What the He!! are you guys talking about?

A type of mushroom called "Hen of the Woods". They are a big, delicious fungus that grows at the base of oak trees. If you like mushrooms and know of any woodlots out that way with plenty of mature oaks, it could be worth your while to do some research and check them out!

Nice ones! I guess I will have to run an "errand" at work today and check a quick spot... grin PB took the words out of my mouth about that so called "beer"...I don't think I have ever been thirsty enough to drink one of those... eek

That's a nice one, Jerkin'm!!

I see a red wine is the beverage of choice with Hen of the Woods. Next time I'll have to put my bottle of Snow Creek Berry Boones Farm (that I've been saving for a special occasion) next to my find! I should have never used Bush Light, that's just embarrasing. blush

It is SUPER early still...I was shocked to see NoWiser had found those as I hit my best stuff last weekend and saw no signs of anything yet..I literally left work an hour after getting in to go check a spot about 15 minutes away...Yes, I have a problem...Look at the bright side, at least you didn't have to post a tiny stunted one to be first on the board... grin

Bummer! Think deer or people? While this might be a little paranoid, if you are using a cell phone to snap pics, might be a good idea to turn off the location settings. Do not know if stand alone cameras have that info tag attached after posting. Jr. and i are going to try again today....at least I did not have to worry about something taking something i could never find in the first place smile

People for sure...I have never seen anybody in this area but the hens were in a spot that was visible if you were looking at all...thought about throwing some "natural" camoflage over them and then thought that was ridiculous...guess not... grin As far as the pics, they were taken with a prehistoric digital..no info to gather from them...If somebody needed them bad enough to dig through picture locations, that's somebody that needs shrooms more than me anyway..I am pretty much over it now and it won't stop me from throwing pics up here..I still have a couple more up my sleeve... wink I will say at the time though I was pretty bummed and thought about putting my shroom stuff away for good this season..

A little redemption today...I am afraid with no rain it may be nearing the end if not the end of the season near me-lots of little dried up stunted ones and only a couple freshies-

pushbutton, any luck up your way? Will be checking a couple spots around my cabin over the weekend and then may have to call it if it doesn't rain-

I haven't been doing any searching since I won the first contest you two were hosting. Since, I've been dwarfed by your awesomeness, and I don't know if I can recover!! I wish I could sneak away one day and head down to pick with one of you guys! I want to get a nice plump maitake before season's end. It's not looking promising though, as we haven't seen a solid rain in what seems like months!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
